On the advice of a friend, I bought a product called Quikclot for the 1st Aid kit I carry in my backpack. Last week, a fellow hiker took a bad fall and gashed his knee. We were a long way from the trailhead and out of cell phone range and he had significant bleeding. We tried using conventional gauze pads, but could not get the bleeding under control. I opened the package of Quikclot, applied the pad and put pressure on it for a couple of minutes. The bleeding stopped! We were able to bandage his knee and got him back to the trailhead, took him to a hospital and get got stitches to close the wound. Without Quikclot, I think we would have been in a real fix.
Quikclot is a gauze pad that contains a substance that causes the blood to clot. It has been used in the military for a number of years and every soldier and Marine has it in their 1st aid kit. I bought it on-line at Quikclot.com and I understand it is now available at some Kroger supermarkets. It will be part of my 1st aid kit and at home from now on. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. It stops bleeding.
