Nick ended up having a CT scan to see if the infection was back two Fridays ago. It was late in the day-5:30. Thankfully it show that the infection hadn’t returned. Dr. Vincent wasn’t comfortable with Nick leaving with his platelet count being below 25,000. It was at 14,000. Nick was admitted for the night for a transfusion. We had no clothes, worse no toothbrush or deodorant. We camped out. They drew blood for cultures every four hours to make sure there was no infection. Nick was allowed to go home, but told to return on Wednesday to see Dr. Abshire.
When I called to get a appointment on Monday Nick was given one on Tuesday week. I called back and left a message that Dr. Abshire expected to see Nick on Wednesday. Nick was given a Wednesday appointment and we were told he needed to plan to be at the hospital for at least 6 hours. Nick would be given IVGI.
Wednesday we arrived by 9am and were given a room to ourselves. Nick’s platetlet count was up to 25,000 already. We were in the unit where the children with cancer are treated. It was sad. The IVGI was given in an IV and Nick’s vitals had to be check every 30 minutes. He did well. The medicine was to help Nick’s spleen pass on the platelets that were not correct.
It must have worked because yesterday’s count was 74,000. We are moving the correct way.
