We keep hearing about the increasing prevalence of obesity among adults, now the epidemic appears to be affecting our children. A new study based on data from the National Center for Education Statistics reported the alarming statistic that 1 in 5 American 4-year olds are obese (Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine April 2009). That means more than half a million 4 year olds are obese, ethnic differences were observed.
Asian children 13% were obese
White children 16% were obese
Black children 21% were obese
Hispanic children 22% were obese
American Indian children 31% were obese
A related story presented at a recent American Heart Association meeting reported that obese children have been found to have neck arteries similar to 45 year olds. Obese children develop the fatty plaque buildup much earlier.
