A study just published in Archives of Internal Medicine reports just this. The Women’s Health Initiative followed over 161,000 postmenopausal women for 8 years. They did not find any lower risk of cancer, heart disease or death among women taking multivitamins compared to women not routinely taking vitamins.
It is always best to get our vitamins and nutrients from foods. But women who do not adhere to a healthy diet may still benefit from multivitamin supplements? Megadose vitamins should be avoided since we do not know the long term effects of super high doses of different vitamins. As for me I am going to continue taking my routine multivitamin and continue to follow a heart healthy diet.
