Inderal belongs to a family of drugs called "beta blockers". They are mostly used for high blood pressure and various heart problems, but they are sometimes used for other things. They block the effects of adrenaline type effects on your body: fast heart rate and breathing and sometimes block feelings of anxiousness to slow things down and sometimes make you feel calmer, but they are not like a sedative type drug.
Sometimes a very small dose of inderal is used before an event that you know makes you nervous (flying, or making a big speech) In that case it has been used taken before the event. I am assuming your doctor gave you a prescription for inderal to take because you were having panic attack types of symptoms (?)
The inderal does not work quickly as it has to go through your entire system to have an effect.
You should take the pills as your doctor prescribed them. If your doctor told you to take them daily, then you should take them at the same time every day. It could be dangerous if you are "trying" someones elses inderal and you don't have a prescription from your doctor, as with certain medical conditions, it could cause seriuos side effects.
If you hyperventilation is caused by asthma, you should tell you doctor right away as folks with asthma should not take inderal.
If your hypervventilation is caused by panic attacks, here is some good information by the Mayo Clinic's website that you can use.
