Is cardiovascular exercise acceptable in patients with untreated PSVT?

Posted by civey

I was diagnosed with PSVT when I was a teen. I took a beta-blocker for years, until the problem decreased with age. In an effort to better treat my bipolar disorder I have started a rigorous exercise prgram.  My concern is when I start on my cardio workout the machines are registering around 130 normally, but has frequent spikes of 200+ bpm lasting about 2 minutes at a time. Long story short, I am sleep deprived AND having these episodes again. I am afraid of over-stressing my heart and would like to know if I should discontinue my cardio sessions?

Your age is a very important part of this discussion.  If you're in your 20's, it may be ok to go untreated for a short time, but is still not a good idea.  The longer you go with very rapid heart rates, you may risk going into a more protracted arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).

You need to verify your heart rate is elevated vs. artifact.  You may need to wear a real heart monitor (e.g. Holter) during exercise to verify the information you're describing.

Consider talking to a doctor to get a low dose of a medicine to treat your SVT using something like atenolol.  They're cheap/generic and easy to take.

Be sure to limit caffeine, sudafed, and other stimulants.  These may worsen SVT.
