im 49 years old what should my heart rate be? if i work out what should it be? thanks e

seem like my hart ranges between 155 and 165 when i work out is this ok or is it high? thanks e

A very rough gauge of heart rate is as follows:

Goal rate = 80% peak

Peak heart rate = 220-age

So, a very rough estimate of you goal heart rate would be in the realm of 130-140bpm.  If you're out of shape, heart rate goes up much more quickly and gets higher than it should.  If you're in shape, you may be exercising beyond your goal range, which I generally recommend against.  I like using heart rate monitors and having a sustained workout in the 80% range.
