High Resting Heart Rate Worse for Heart

Posted Jan 17 2010 12:00am

A study just published this past week in Norway showed that all men and particularly women less than 70 are much more likely die of a heart attack if their resting heart rate is above 72 beats per minute. For every 1o beats per minute above the normal of 72, a man’s risk of death increases by at least 10% and women less than 70 years old have an increased risk of 18%!

Luckily, exercise for women is considered to help counteract this increased risk. Another option for both men and women is to take a heart medication like beta-blockers to lower the heart rate, blood pressure AND reduce the risk of dying from a heart attack.
