During the summer our neighbours trees along our boundary were trimmed to allow us to see the sun. With the neighbours boundary trees under control we now have lovely views of other planting and peaks at the city below and lake Rotorua beyond that. Our neighbour has been living here for 40 years and has extensive plantings of totara, kauri, rimu five finger, walnuts, tamarillo, citrus, king ferns and wither flowering gums to name just a few on his 1 acre block.
These tree are home to numerous birds including bell bird, tui, white eye, shining cuckoo, rifleman, finches, a morepoke and eastern bay rosella’s. Last spring we saw a native kaka nipping the wild cherry blossoms for a few mornings. I remember lying in bed and hearing their racus call. That was quite a buzz as its very uncommon to experience these in our area. Well we chopped the wild cherry down in September and have burnt it during the winter so we won’t be seeing birds just there again.
I fitted a rough bird feeder and have really enjoyed all my new friends that sing their little songs and encourage me to listen and try to identify their call. It will be much easier with my new implant as I can currently ‘hear’ the very high speech sounds of ‘T’ and ‘S’ but more on that in another post. I mix dripping with wild bird seed mix into nice looking blocks. I place the dripping/seed blocks along with orange segments, apple halves and brown sugar water. Unfortunately the occasional rat and possum have also been attracted.
Our son Carl has a .177 air rifle that spits pellets at 1000 feet per second! The distance from one of the feeders to our sliding kitchen window is just ten meters and a perfect spot for a hunter in his dressing gown!
