Summer = Camp

Posted Jul 07 2011 7:39am

I was lucky enough to spend many long and incredible Summers at camp when we were kids. Now that I am a parent, I realize what a gift it was for my brother and I to be able to live here for up to eight weeks at a time. (Wait a minute...my parents had no kids at home for eight weeks!?)

Now that Mia is almost seven, she has quite a few camp options open to her. No overnights yet, but she has started her very first all day camp through Girl Scouts. I was a little apprehensive about sending her on a bus to somewhere I have never been with counselors I don't know, but my fears were put to rest after she got off that bus that first afternoon with the BIGGEST smile ever. She is a born camper like her Mom (and uncle) and loved it. Yay!

Even my boys are getting in on the action. Our local museum runs two hour mini camps that they are going to one at a time with their Grammy throughout the Summer. Yesterday it was Peas' turn. The theme was the Solar System. He sat and listened to the teacher, watched the IMAX movie, did all of the projects, learned about the planets and made projects with the other kids. He came home talking about how Mars is red, Jupiter is fast, and that we live on the planet "Earf." No accomodations, no special anything. Amazing. Tomorrow Cameron will go to dinosaur camp.

So in our house at least, Summer means camp with no limits. Love.
