School for auditory impaired boosted by new technology

Jordanstown School for the Auditory and Visually Impaired in Belfast has been able to purchase a new FM radio system to be used by all of the school’s pupils who are deaf.
This latest technology cost £14,000 and was made possible thanks to a donation from The Birkdale Trust for the Deaf. It means that the pupils will now be able to use special receivers which are no bigger than a finger-nail and are easily connected into either a cochlear implant or a hearing aid.
The compactness of the receivers is much appreciated by the pupils as they previously had to wear battery-boxes either attached to waist-bands or strapped to their chests with leads connected to their hearing aids.
Ian Heatley from Phonak UK spent a day in school with the pupils and teachers helping to set the system up.
The school Principal, Anne Magee, said: “All of our pupils deserve to be provided with the highest quality resources and this new FM system will enable us to create the best possible listening environment in which the pupils who are deaf will be able to develop and achieve."
