Our homework helper

Posted Sep 16 2009 10:05pm
Riley surprised me with this drawing on my home office white board (dry erase board) a couple of weeks ago. I must be doing something right because I'm the No. 1 Mom, and I look fabulous as a redhead! (Underneath "Tiffani" is "Riley" – she's trying to write in cursive.)

White boards are a good way to get kids interested in homework and writing. Riley loves ours – one in my office, one in her room and one in the kitchen. We use the kitchen one for spelling tests, math problems, short stories and notes to Ryan. She'd much rather practice "whiskers" and "shrimp" on the board than in her notebook.

She plays with the one in her room; right now it lists what we did on Labor Day: "We are going to the mall. We are going to get ice cream."

I use the one in my office to remind myself of article deadlines, errands and what we're supposed to work on for Riley's therapy. That is, when it's not covered by a drawing. I guess since I've immortalized it with a photo and on this blog, I can erase the picture and return to its original purpose.

If you're having a tough time getting your kid interested in writing or math or any kind of homework, try a white board. They're pretty cheap, easy to hang and easy to use. Have fun with it and maybe it won't seem like work.
