We are a family of head colds here at the moment, but as usual Carmen has escaped so hopefully she doesn't get one either. Its sore throats, runny noses and fevers, oh and I think grumpy too.
The moral of the story for Saturday was I should have conquered the urge to go to Bunnings!I was just driving down Utahina road and there was this dude in a flash new Hilux Ute, doing a backing manoeuvre. He seemed to be making a meal of the process but looked like he was getting it together so I passed real slow on the right side of the road. Last I saw of him he was looking back over his shoulder and the vehicle was pointing in the right direction. However he must have had a sudden change of heart as I was suddenly given a sharp nudge in the left rear corner, tearing my bumper in half in the process. I don't remember hearing anything, just felt the jolt and realised we need to talk. He was so sorry and said he never even saw me. That was obvious. He apologised and explained it was not a good day and was not enjoying this whole house moving process as a result of his recent matrimonial indifference. I imparted my sincere sympathy with a firm handshake and friendly smile, and suggested the day could only improve from here. At least it wasn’t raining and his furniture was keeping dry.
I accomplished a premature revisit to my garage and pieced it all back together with some self tapping screws. The kids were impressed as apparently dad didn't even appear stressed!
I did get to Bunnings Warehouse, though Emily insisted on accompanying me. Carl secretly sent Carmen a txt as she dutifully attended a Phlebotomist Course in Auckland. By the end of the day my purchase was still in the mess on my bench, unopened.
It’s not the big things that throw me, just the little ones like wondering for a minute why I'm up town when its 4.50pm and I supposed to be picking up Carmen from the Lab. Then in my neural challenged process I can't remember which street she works at as they changed labs nearly 12 months ago. Somehow I get it together and arrive on time, determined I won't need the car the next day.
Yesterday I went outside to the garage for something, I'm not sure what. Anyway I stayed there all day, just pottering around and now I have a perfectly tidy shed! I wouldn't have done it if it didn't just somehow happen that way.
Somehow my projects become bigger than they need to be. I'm in the process making a bigger project out of my hydroponics. I'm trying to have nutrient tanks located in the garden shed and the controllers separate again in the garage where they will be safe. I will only have the tubing, probes and solenoid valves in the glasshouse.
I'm planning on separate systems in the future so certainly more involved than when I first anticipated automatic dosing. I might be lucky and get a plastic tunnel house or something one day so will have the electrics in place just in case. I have read up a bit on the net and discovered the pH probe cables can apparently be lengthened by using coaxial cable and BNC connections. I was lucky and purchased 10 X 10mtr cables with the right connections on Trademe for $34 including freight. They were old stock from a marine shop, so I got a bargain and will have 7 (70 mtrs) spare! Now I have to put theory into practice.
My first special hydroponic Licato RZ lettuce seeds have germinated nicely on the kitchen bench and will be ready for the nutrient in a day or so. They come from the hydroponic shop in Tirau. They are quite interesting as they come in a perfectly round coating about 3mm in diameter. I think it must be a special nutrient to give them a boost. It makes for easy planting, just 1 seed per pot. It’s so much fun for me and good to have a real interest beyond cochlear implants. I can burn time and talk to the pups and it doesn't matter being deaf. If I can't make it out to the glass house then the plants are quite happy growing without me.
I just wish I had a few more cucumbers as they are now nearly $4 in the supermarket. I still have heaps of peppers and the leeks look like they will be a success. My lonely Siberian Tomato plant from Heirloom seeds, though flowering well and looking a picture of health is not a good indication of how a whole packet of life can be germinated. I planted, watered, over watered, forgot about them and they quietly died before there was any indication of life.
