Our families tramped into Children's Hospital in September 2003 for Riley's first cochlear implant surgery. My parents, brother and sister-in-law, and Ryan's parents all made the trip with us. Aunts and uncles and people from our church came, too.
As you can see from the video Riley didn't have a care in the world. She pulled her little suitcase through the hall and promptly dropped it as soon as she saw the play equipment in the One-Day Surgery center. While I filled out paperwork, she slid, climbed and crawled through tunnels with other kids. It seemed to take forever before they called us back to a room, then forever again before they took her back and forever again before the surgery was finished.
All was well, and we went home the next day. Less than a month later, she heard our voices for the first time.
