Today was my little dude's IEP meeting with his soon to be kindergarten team. It was wonderful to say the least. The professionals who will be supporting his education starting in September have all shown me that they are STUDENT centered educators whose number one goal is to be sure my child is successful next year.
As a parent, I couldn't wish for more. As a former teacher, I know what a rare and wonderful thing this truly is. As we opened the meeting, I was struck at how surreal it all felt. And I remembered... Almost five years ago, another team of professionals came to my home to talk about my baby boy's future. This was long before he had cochlear implants, before he had hearing aids, before AVT, before everything. We had no knowledge, no connections, just a diagnosis. One of the professionals asked us what our goals were for Peas long term. I pointed to the elementary school down the street and said: "I want my son to walk into that school on the first day of kindergarten with his twin brother." We had no idea at the time if this was possible, feasible or realistic. We just knew we wanted it. We committed ourselves to doing whatever we had to do for this singular focus. We changed our lives to make LISTENING an integral part of Peas' personality. We researched, networked, cried, made mistakes, and kept moving forward. And so today here we were, in the conference room at the elementary school down the street, preparing for that exact goal to happen. Peas has worked hard. His skills are solid. His MAP is exceptional. Everyone in the room today had HIGH expectations for my sweet boy's ability to listen, speak and LEARN. On September 4th, Peas and his twin brother will walk into the SAME school and take their seats in their kindergarten class. The journey is only beginning, we know. But we know that if we can attain this GOAL, the future possibilities are endless. |
