Hello there!

I am currently sick at home :( As much as the flu sucks, one of the benefits of living so close to the city (and having no Friday classes!) is that when I’m feeling as crappy as I do now I can just bus it back home and at least be a little more comfy. Let’s hope I shape up a little before Sunday… I need all my energy to cheer my Giants on!

Anyways…

As you know, I have professed my new love for Yoga Vida, my new favorite studio. One of the things I failed to mention in my review though, was my true a-ha moment; the moment that I truly knew that this place was for me.

As an aspiring musician, I often find that I connect most with people and places on a musical level. I associate so much gut feeling with music that it is often the medium through which I find emotional attachment. That being said, the instructors at Yoga Vida who I have worked with so far have all had wonderful taste in music. Of course this is a matter of opinion, but to me it’s important- yoga is already so rooted in our own feelings and inner presence that for me, music should definitely be part of that equation, and listening to music that is similar to my own taste has been a HUGE plus in class.

So that moment came at the end of one of the classes last week, as we moved into our savasana. I was lying on my mat, relaxing and moving into peace with myself, when the instructor switched the song to “Re: Stacks” by Bon Iver. THAT SONG is my current obsession, like what I listen to when I fall asleep at night. This is a cheesy thing to say, but it was a total “meant to be” moment.

So my point is that when it comes to your fitness or even de-stressing environment, music can be a huge factor. The ambiance that’s right for you might be the perfect boost to finish that last mile, find that deepest meditation or even just fall asleep.

With cardio, especially boxing, I like a bad-ass playlist: songs with a killer beat that will push me to my limit. With yoga, however, I stick to soft rock, acoustics, and folksy-inspired songs, which, coincidentally, is my go-to music for listening (and writing) on a daily basis. I can deal with new-age styles, and I actually enjoy a lot of it, but I find that some yoga studios overdo it a little. Again, a matter of opinion, but I feel most comfortable sticking to what I know and love.

So without further ado, here’s my personal go-to playlist for practicing yoga at home, in no particular order.

Namaste.
