As people around the globe prepare to celebrate ' Chinese New Year' and the start of the year of the rabbit, vegans around the world are getting very excited about a new world record being set as 2011 rolls forward.

There's a plan to double the number of people who eat a healthy and sustainable plant based diet .
One World Day Double One Diet Dare already notes some big name celebrities who have raised their hands.
President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Mike Tyson, Natalie Portman, Oxford University, the USDA and American Dietetic Association, Woody Harrelson and even Walt Disney World in Orlando have been championing healthier more sustainable plant based eating.
When Oprah and 378 of her staff went vegan for a week it drove a new vegan cookbook to the top of Amazon best sellers list. There are a host of other vegan books in the Amazon top sellers charts including the popular Skinny Bitch weight loss diet books.
A host of new films and documentaries such as
PLANEAT the movie, Fast Food Nation, Sea the Truth,
Foodmatters,
a Delicate Balance,
The End of The Line,
Earthlings,
Forks over Knives, and
Food Inc have all focussed on the situation that it is suicidal to continue on our present road of a high calorie low nutrient diet.
For years vegans have been waiting for a unique date - World Vegan Day 2011 on November the first - 1:11:11. 'It just seemed too rare a date to be left unmarked by something extra special" said one leading UK vegan who started a 1:11:11 website www.allwillberevealed.org.uk a number of years ago.
The 1:11:11 date has since been grabbed by a group calling itself
Plantarian who have started www.1worldday.org with the support of the people behind the UK Vegfests, Bonobo TV and Foods for Life, a health and nutrition consultancy in London.
On their website they say
"A
day for world harmony and harmlessness
A day to pledge to act responsibly and thoughtfully to make a positive difference to our planet and the beings who live on it.
From simply eating a healthy whole food plant based diet that brings benefits to human health, people and the environment to organising an event that educates people about the advantages of a healthier, kinder, more sustainable lifestyle."
And urge us to pledge to try a plant based diet, at least on November the 1st, " to help set a new world record for healthier more sustainable living."
They have plans to link up with a number of manufacturers of plant based foods and encourage restaurants to feature a One World Day dish on their menus.
Leading UK Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston says "There is no doubt that if we are to survive on this planet we need to rethink the typical average diet. We need to eat at least 5 portions of vegetables a day and 3 portions of fruit of which at least one should be berries. We should dramatically reduce the amount of saturated animal fat, hydrogenated fat and low fibre, highly processed and refined foods that are typical in our national diet"
"We are the most overfed and yet undernourished generation that has ever lived on the planet and our demand for cheap quick food and quest for profit over health is undermining the survival of not just the human race but the planet we live on"
"The Oxford University/ European EPIC study has confirmed that the '5 a day' message whilst better than the status quo, is not enough to make a meaningful difference to health. In the Oxford study a 22% reduction in heart disease risk doesn't kick in until subjects were eating 8 portions of fruit and vegetables a day"
"In clinic we see benefits to weight, fertility, digestion, mood, energy and many other health problems when we change peoples diets.
Research trials and study data collected by Doctors in America have shown a Plantarian style diet can reduce risks of diabetes, stroke, heart disease, obesity and cancer"
The year of the rabbit is set to be a landmark year in human history whatever happens. Either the year when we woke up and started to act on the research that was staring us in the face or the year when we foolishly and selfishly continued as we were, blind to the problems facing the world.
