Whole Foods vs. Stop ‘n Shop

Posted Jan 26 2011 4:19pm

So the weekend is over and it’s already Wednesday! Where have I been? Oh yes, working.

On Monday I worked the morning at my mom’s office, helping the accounting department file away papers from 2010 and make folders for 2011. For breakfast, I had a bowl of oats with apples, brown sugar, granola and peanut butter.

My mom was nice enough to make me lunch too. I didn’t have my camera with me, so no picture. She made me a spinach wrap with hummus, pepper turkey, cheese and spinach. I had it with a side of Lay’s potato chips (sometimes I need to have just 1). ;-)

That night was spent working at the hotel. I did get to “dog-sit” for Catie though while Joe was out at a concierge dinner. She’s just the sweetest dog; I love working for her (yep, I work FOR her not WITH her).

Tuesday morning, my mom didn’t need me in the office so I was able to relax at home (see: sleeping in until 10!) before I went to work. For breakfast I had 2 Van’s waffles topped with a banana and maple syrup.

When I got home from my (slow) shift I had a hankering for one of my brown sugar oat muffins . I had one topped with TJ’s peanut butter and jam.

This morning, I just couldn’t seem to get myself up when I wanted to. And I didn’t get out any exercise. For some reason my enthusiasm and drive to exercise just isn’t there anymore. I have a couple of races coming up in March and May but with this snow and cold weather, I just can’t get myself to go out! And once David goes on active orders, I’ll sign up at the local Y but until then, no gym membership. I keep telling myself that I’ll get myself to exercise for at least an hour a day but I keep coming up with excuses. I don’t like it! I need to get my butt in gear!

Ok, rant over.

For breakfast, I had an old standard of oats with raisins, brown sugar, granola and peanut butter. Then it was off to go grocery shopping. I went to both Whole Foods and Stop ‘n Shop. I do love Whole Foods. I love their organic selection, their deli bar and especially their bulk section. But it was all very overwhelming. I don’t usually shop there so I have no strategy and knew where nothing was. It took me about 20 minutes to find tahini! What I ended up buying was:

  • Roasted peanuts
  • Pistachios
  • Quinoa
  • Tahini
  • Honey
  • Honey Mustard
  • Goat cheese
  • Yogurt
  • FSTG Yellow chips (they were on sale!)
  • Ground cloves
  • Garbanzo beans
  • Mi-Del graham crackers
  • And my lunch from the bar – pork tamale, sesame broccoli, wheat berries with apples, couscous with fruit and walnuts, green beans and a side salad

On my way home I stopped at Stop ‘n Shop for produce and meat and some specific products that David likes. When I got to SnS, it was so much less stressful than WF. I knew where I was going and it was much less crowded. For certain items, I think WF definitely wins out (Bulk section and coffee section!) but I think I will stick with SnS for my shopping needs. It may not have the largest natural food selection but it definitely doesn’t burn a hole in my pocket. My budget went way over this week. But I did shop for the next week and a half because David and I leave for Vegas on the 6th. I hope it all lasts that long!

  • Cascadian Farms cereal – on sale!
  • Kashi granola bars – on sale!
  • Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce
  • Hot fresh salsa
  • Head of lettuce
  • Carrots/Garlic
  • Apples/Bananas
  • When Pigs Fly bread – Six Grain & Sesame Seed
  • Whole Grain bread and English muffins
  • Eggs
  • Paper Towels

I have so many things to make! Today is my mother in law’s birthday (Happy Birthday Nancy!) and we’re throwing her a party on Sunday. I’m making Moroccan spiced hummus with honey minus the saffron (dang that stuff is expensive!). I’ll pair that with sides of pita bread and veggies.

To get another dish out of my new food processor, I’ll be attempting to make my own peanut butter! Kath recently posted a recipe for homemade crunchy peanut butter and I thought I would give it a try! I hope I got 4 cups of peanuts. ;-)

For dinner tonight, I’ll be trying this recipe that I also found through KERF. It’s chicken topped with pistachios and goat cheese. Yes please!

Tonight I actually have David around because he’s not working his night job. Hope everyone is enjoying their Wednesday!

Are you a huge Whole Foods fan? If I had Trader Joe’s nearby, I would LOVE to shop there instead.
