When healthy eating causes problems

Posted Jun 20 2011 2:26pm
Hope everyone had a great weekend! I have a story for you.

I'm sure Brian won't mind me telling, at least I hope not. But I think it illustrates a good point, so I'm telling it anyway. Its kind of long, so bear with me.

This weekend we went up to the lake. We hang out with the people across the street often. Their kids & our kids play & we have cocktails together some nights. This weekend we did something we hadn't tried yet-we made food together. But I have to say, we've had many conversations about food. She grew up on a farm & they still live on acreage & have a very large garden. We discussed my vegetarianism & why I am. They are not. We talked about our views on chemicals & hormones in food. And how natural is better. We were all in agreement.
So, I wanted to try a great looking recipe from my new  Vegetarian Times . (I'll share it when I make it again) She & I went to the store to pick up a few things, but shopped separately.
We decided to cook at her house since they have a gas grill & we have charcoal & it would take awhile to get ready.  I sat down & started to prep the items for cooking. She was pulling out from her fridge & pantry the extra ingredients we needed.
Here's where I got confused. Little by little, I saw that everything she had in her house was fake food. Such as, Country Crock spread instead of butter. The green bottle of shelf stable Kraft parmesan cheese instead of real cheese. All the juice & drinks for the kids were 'light' or diet. Every item she had seemed to be the opposite of what I thought we had agreed on-no chemicals! Now I am not perfect by any means, but I was a little sad. I realized when my kids were there, that's what they were getting. Diet pop is a huge no-no for my kids!
Anyway, I said nothing (I didn't want to be rude) & finished prepping the meal. And then we ate it. I couldn't help be let down & the whole time thought., "Wow I bet this will be amazing with real food ingredients!"
These words aren't just decoration!
Ok, now I'm wrapping it up. For years, Brian had pretty bad  acid reflux & suffered daily. He took lots of medications for it, but he still suffered. After he (I) changed his diet, he no longer needed his medications & hasn't had an issue for at least 6 months!
After we ate our meal on Saturday we hung out for a bit & then went to bed. I felt really sick & my stomach hurt. When Brian got up on Sunday morning, he said he had really bad heartburn & was in a lot of pain. He was miserable leaning over the kitchen sink & all of sudden starting violently throwing up! After that, he had to take some heartburn medicine to feel better.
Now, do I think that one little meal caused him (& me) all that pain? Yes, I do. And so does he. You may disagree & that is certainly fine.
So, the title of my post means this: when you nourish your body with healthy, real food all the time & suddenly throw in a bunch of garbage, there will be consequences.
