what do you feed your dog?

Posted Aug 15 2011 7:00pm

My poor sweet Olive has to have surgery on Wednesday. Ian and I noticed a red bump in Olive’s ear a few weeks ago. My mom took her to the vet last week since Ian and I work M-F, and the vet said it was a bee sting and gave us some antibiotics and some topical cream for it. We knew the bump was something more than that. We were pretty sure it was a histiocytoma , which is a benign tumor, but we wanted it biopsied to make sure it wasn’t malignant. We decided to try a different vet, and sure enough this vet confirmed what we had guessed. She said it may go away on it’s own but she doesn’t like where it’s at, so she has to have it removed. Poor girl.

The vet asked us what we feed Olive. Ian proudly declared, “Blue Buffalo”. Here are the main ingredients- Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whole Ground Brown Rice, Whole Ground Barley, Oatmeal, Chicken Fat, Rye, Tomato Pomace (source of Lycopene), Natural Chicken Flavor, Whole Potatoes, Peas, Whole Carrots, Whole Sweet Potatoes, Blueberries, Cranberries, Flaxseed (source of Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids), Barley Grass, Dried Parsley.

Sounds pretty healthy right?

The vet said she has been doing some research and a lot of dogs on blue buffalo have been found to have some problems, and when their dog food is switched, their problems go away.

I hate knowing that what we thought was a very healthy food choice for our furry child, is actually causing health problems, and maybe her histiocytoma? : (.

Looking for a new natural dog food! What brand do you guys feed your pets?
