In men as well as in women hair loss is a normal part of ageing. Hair loss is the term generally used for unintentional loss of hair on skull.
It may be caused due to:
Being male itself is a cause for baldness
Family history of baldness
Fungal infections like black dot tinea caused by Tinea capitis
Over use of chemicals for hair cleaning, processing and relaxation
Long term exposure of hair shaft to traction
Pattern baldness in males
Consistent use of hot comb and hair dryers
Deficiency of iron
Inherited disorder of hair shaft
Deficiency of iron
Compulsive hair pulling like trochotillomania
Physical and psychological stress
Hair loss may be due to certain diseases or medical conditions like:
Hair loss secondary to syphilis
Keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans
Chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus
Discoid lupus erythematosus
Tumor of adrenal gland
Pseudopelade of Brocq
Booster tablets for testosterone
Drugs used for the treatment of arthritis, depression, gout, high blood pressure and heart problems
Adverse drug effects like chemotherapy for cancer
According to Ayurveda pitta dosha can cause hail loss. Pitta increases by excessive intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, meat, oily, greasy, acidic, spicy, sour foods and excessive smoking. Pitta is acidity. It also increases due to anemic condition, intake of chemical medications, stress, low blood circulation and general weakness.
Dandruff and lice can also cause hair loss.
Imbalanced diet, low protein and iron deficient diet can cause hair loss.
The hair loss in men may be stress related also. There are two types of stress related hair fall first is Talogen effluvium and the second one is Alopecia areata. In the first type the hair loss is due to psychological stress due to illness, financial problems or work related tensions. The stress may also be due to death in the family, divorce, or change in the environment. In this type the growth of hair stops for 2-3 months and then starts falling. The hairs grow again after 8 to 9 months. In Alopecia areata there is an immune response by the body against the hair follicles and the hair loss is due to the damaged hair follicles.
