Blood is an essential fluid that runs throughout the body and its main function is to carry nutrients and supply them to various organs and cells in the body. Blood runs through blood vessels consisting of veins and arteries. Arteries are the blood vessels that carry pure blood pumped from the heart, and veins carry the impure blood from other body parts to the heart.
Blood clot results of a complex mechanism that is usually put in place when any blood vessel is injured and leaks out. Although a blood clot is supposed to take place to repair a blood vessel, nothing is clearly known about what causes blood clots other than blood vessel injuries. A blood clot situation can have serious medical repercussions if the blood clot breaks off and freely travels through the bloodstream to coagulate any blood vessel.
Causes of Blood Clots
One sure way that triggers blood clot (also called thrombus) is through a blood vessel injury. However, there are other reasons too. Here they are:
A trial fibrillation is a condition that is a disorder of the upper chamber of the heart. Normal heart chambers beat in a particular rhythmic manner. However, if the chamber beats in an irregular manner, it predisposes a person to the risk of thrombus formation along the lining of the atrium. Such blood clots may cause symptoms of heart attack or trigger other heart disorders.
A genetic factor may cause the tendency to thrombus formation due to sticky blood cells in the body. Such a condition (called hypercoagulability) can be a result of genetic blood clotting disorder. A person born with a genetic mutation of Factor V Leiden mutation can be prone to the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
Long term illness, or sitting in a same position for prolonged period of time such as in a long air travel can also cause blood clot formation. As per the statistical data released by the World Health Organization, around 1 in every 4500 air travelers complain about thrombus formation.
Prolonged immobility due to hospitalization, bed rest, illness, and pregnancy may cause blood clots. Pregnancy and recent heart strokes are risk factors for easy blood clotting in the body.
Women undergoing hormone therapy or the ones who are on contraceptive pills can be prone to blood clot as well.
There are four compounds in blood, namely red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and blood plasma. The platelets are responsible to form the blood clots in the bloodstream. In case the platelet count increases suddenly, it can cause unnecessary blood clot formation.
Other not so obvious risk factors for blood clots are lack of physical activity, obesity, smoking, high blood pressure , certain cancers, rheumatoid arthritis or other auto immune disorders, history of varicose or deep veins thrombosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and complication of an invasive surgery.
Blood clot is the body’s mechanism to treat blood vessel injury. Trauma to blood vessels due to injury or surgery can trigger formation of thrombus. However, if the thrombus formation occurs without any relevant cause, it should be treated as a medical emergency as it can cause a life-threatening condition such as a stroke or a heart attack. Thus, no symptoms of blood clot should be neglected and immediate treatment should be sought.
