What’s Cocoa Good For?

Posted Nov 23 2011 11:38am
Have you ever wondered what cocoa is good for? I came across this article which explains the Four New Uses for Cocoa . Check out this article, but here’s some general info about the topic.

Cocoa is good for your heart—to stop your cravings for food and other snacks—help in your skin care—and boost your mood.

According to Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, Director of Women and Heart Disease at Lenox Hill Hospital, “Treat your ticker to some cocoa: Its flavonoids are linked to a host of cardio perks, including lowering blood pressure, reducing "bad" LDL cholesterol, and decreasing your overall risk for heart disease.” So, how can you reap the benefits of cocoa—add a sprinkle of cocoa to your coffee, tea or breakfast drink; or maybe on your oatmeal—the suggestion is for 1 tablespoon per day.

When I heard about this one I did not believe it. If you take a whiff of cocoa, it will stave off your hunger and you can stop the mid-day candy runs to the vending machine. Hmm, maybe I’ll have to try this one to see if I believe it.

With regard to saving your skin, cocoa has antioxidants that repair skin cells—neutralizing harmful free radicals. (According to Dr. Ava Shamban) Sounds pretty good to me! Check out the article I mentioned for a homemade cocoa facial mask that you can use once a week.

Now the last one—boosting your mood—I definitely wanted to read more. So, cocoa can make your brain happy. “Some of those compounds up your endorphin and serotonin levels, both of which generate a good mood.” (According to Dr. Elizabeth Somer)

So, what are your thoughts on cocoa?
