Home LIonel Richie Weekend recap (Lionel Richie concert!)

23 comments Sep 30/13 LIonel Richie, Weekend Recap

About 5 or 6 years ago, my husband made a dream come true when he took me to see Lionel Richie live in concert in Connecticut.  It was fantastic, but I remember being in a state of shock over the fact that we were actually there,  and I didn’t get to completely take it all in.

I knew that I’d have to see him perform again someday.

When Lionel finally announced that he’d be touring again, I screamed so loudly that the neighbors down the street probably heard.  I’m a fan club member (which probably comes as no surprise to you whatsoever), so I was able to take advantage of the pre-sale.  Unfortunately, Charlotte wasn’t part of his tour schedule, but we did have the option of seeing him perform in Atlanta or Nashville.  Since neither of us had ever been there, MT and I chose Nashville.

I’ll admit that the thought of leaving Michael for the night was pretty unpleasant, and a Lionel Richie concert is just about the only thing that would even ever make me consider it.  I knew that he’d be in excellent hands with my parents though, and I handled it like a big girl when we dropped him off on Saturday morning.

MT and I landed in Nashville at about noon and grabbed a quick lunch at the airport before making our way downtown.

We spent some time walking around and shopping before we planted ourselves in Margaritaville for some drinks (virgin for me of course) and dinner.  The live music was excellent, so we just took our time and hung out for awhile.

Let me tell you know, I’m fairly certain that I was the only sober person over the age of 21 in that city!

The last hour before the concert seemed to drag on forever, and I was just about to go crazy. I probably had the goofiest grin on my face as we walked into the arena.

After a great opening performance by Amos Lee, Lionel made his grand entrance onto the stage.  I grabbed MT’s arm, jumped up and down, screamed “I love you” toward the stage, and just about had a heart attack.

Even though we had amazing seats and Lionel was right before my very eyes, I did manage to maintain my composure. You all would have been proud. :)

That being said, I took in every single Lionel-filled minute- singing and dancing to every single song.

Lionel is such an incredible performer and has a ridiculous amount of energy.  The man must drink a ton of green smoothies.

He played the piano, danced, sang to perfection, interacted with the audience (which included Reba McIntyre!), and completely exceeded my expectations.  He sang nearly every major hit from his days with The Commodores and his solo albums and also a few more obscure songs that only crazed fans such as myself would know. ;)

At one point, he tricked the audience into thinking that Diana Ross was coming out sing Endless Love with him.  I forgave him though.

The night went by so quickly, and before I knew it, Lionel was taking his final bow and making his way off the stage. Luckily, he came back out one last time to sing We Are the World.

Since the concert, I’ve constantly replayed some video clips that I shot, and I’ve replayed the concert back in my mind over and over again.  I’m thrilled to be back home and reunited with my baby boy, but I had one of the very best nights of my life this past weekend and won’t ever forget it.

What was your all time favorite concert?  I also saw Billy Joel and Elton John perform together, and it was incredible. Obviously!

Adam is definitely a cutie. You should audition for The Voice, and then you can meet him. Haha. Have a great week!

I SO cannot sing and the cats and the dogs would leave in droves if I tried out on The Voice – ha! Think about Lucy’s poor ears:( I would not mind a celebrity encounter with Mr. Levine:)

  2. So glad you had a great time!!

  4. It sounds like you had a great time!! I think my favorite concert was Aaron Lewis. He was playing acoustic at the Warner theatre which was pretty intimate of a setting. I loved it!

  7. Aww I love your genuine excitement for Lionel Richie and that your husband treated you to this. You guys flew out? thats dedication. It sounded like an amazing experience.

p.s when you said that you were drinking a virgin drink in nashville I was racking my brain to understand why.. but then I remember that you are pregnant and it all made sense again lol.. how are you feeling?!

Haha. Yep…virgin drinks for the pregnant lady. I am feeling much better actually. I have been fighting a nasty cold, but at least I am not dealing with constant morning sickness! :)

  8. How much fun! I love Nashville.
My favorite concert was a Kenny Chesney epic event in Pittsburgh a few years back. I dragged some of my non country music loving friends and converted them.

That sounds like so much fun! Yes, Nashville was awesome. I definitely need to get back there someday. :)

  9. Sounds like you had an amazing time! So excited for you. I’d have to say seeing NKOTB in the 80s was pretty much the best concert I’ve ever been too, but I mean how can you top that hehe.

OMG- I saw them like 4 or 5 years ago, and I was like a little kid all over again! It was amazing. I think I cried. Haha. Who was your favorite? I was a Joey girl. :)

  10. MT outdid himself and so happy you got to enjoy another Lionel concert!!! I haven’t been to Nashville yet, but my mom LOVES it, so that’s reason enough to go there soon!!!

  11. You’re so cute in your t-shirt. What a fan! I would loooooove to see the Billy Joel and Elton John concert. I wonder if they’ll ever join up again???

Aw, thank you! :) I really hope that Billy & Elton tour together again someday. They were so good together! They did some duets and sang some things separately, and they played on this giant piano that had two keyboards. The piano rotated too, so we got a good view of both of them the whole time. :)
