Wedding Wednesday: Can you ask for cash instead of gifts?

Posted Aug 15 2012 5:44pm

This is a touchy topic… you’re strapped in tough economic times, but you’re guests may feel slighted and insulted by the request for cash, and you yourself might be uncomfortable or unclear on how to ask.

Technically, there is an entire etiquette  book on how to approach everything for your wedding, including wording for invitations. Most say that its a no-no to even add your registry to your invitation, so flat out requesting cash might send some guests into a tailspin. So again, this begs the question, how do you get what you really want and need without ruffling feathers?

Well, thank goodness its 2012 and we have so much technology at our fingertips! Nowadays, you can avoid the taboo and touchy money request that might upset some, but still convey your preference for cold hard cash with a few clever digital aids.

Creating a custom couples website ( WordPress is an excellent choice.. I might be bias, but it’s super simple!) or a super cool app from Appy Couple for your big day (Yes, THERE IS AN APP FOR THAT!) are two easy ways to add a link to your registry or express your desire to put money in the bank.

Make sure you explain WHY you want cash- saving for your first house? Trying to take the honeymoon of your dreams? Get creative and allow your guests to “purchase a brick” to build your dream house, or a “ticket” to your destination of choice.

Even better? Check out this super cool, super convenient new site called Wedding Republic . They allow you to create an online registry and add creative things like a puzzle for your guests to “buy a piece” of your first home. You

can add cooking classes, zip lining, and pretty much anything you can think of! Instead of spending hours at a store scanning forks and knives you probably don’t need, why not spend a few minutes online creating the registry you truly want?

Post a link on your wedding blog or social media pages for all your friends and family to see, this way you won’t offend anyone… and you’ll be one step closer to building the life you truly dream of with the help of the people you truly love.
