Happy Wednesday!

(Or what’s left of it…)

It has been kind of a crazy day here.   The kind of crazy day where I cannot remember what I ate, who I talked to, or what my name is.

Anyway, today I want to talk about internal ways to promote healthy skin by sharing some of the vitamins and supplements that I take each day.

Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil

You’ve heard me rave about using sea buckthorn berry oil topically, but I haven’t really discussed how I use it to repair my skin from the inside out.  Basically, I’ll add a few drops of this to my water or smoothies each day.  It does have a slight berry flavor though, so I cannot add it to every smoothie that I make without compromising the flavor.  I also take one capsule of the oil a day in pill form.  This oil contains Omega 7, vitamin E, and vitamin A which are great for hair, skin, and nails.  The oil is also good for gastrointestinal health, so it can promote clearer skin.

Evening Primrose Oil

I also take this oil daily in pill form.  When taken consistently, I find that I get less hormonal breakouts which is an awesome benefit.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid has antioxidant effect and “seems to help prevent certain kinds of cell damage in the body, and also restores vitamin levels such as vitamin E and vitamin C” (source). Basically, I take this with the hope that it will keep me looking young. ;)

Prenatal Vitamins

Yep.  I’m still taking those suckers.  Luckily, they don’t make me sick like they did when I was pregnant.  I just think of them as an extra way to ensure that my body is getting all of the vitamins it needs to function well.

In my opinion, the best way to treat your skin well isn’t through vitamins and products (though those things are important).  The best thing for our skin is good food.  Plain and simple.

I always try to eat foods rich in omega-3 faty acids (such as fish) and vitamin-A rich foods like sweet potatoes.  I’ll also sprinkle chia seeds and ground flax seed on salads and yogurt and blend them into smoothies.

I’m also a huge fan of coconut water, coconut milk, and coconut oil to keep my skin soft and hydrated.

That’s how I eat for beauty in a nutshell.  Do you follow a specific diet or vitamin regime to care for your skin?
