Vitamin D: Benefits and Autoimmune.

Posted Sep 01 2010 8:44am
Imagine a nutrient that could help prevent cancer , heart disease and tuberculosis, preserve bones and thwart autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis , rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile diabetes !

That’s the potential promise for vitamin D ; a nutrient whose usefulness was once thought to be limited to prevention of rickets in children and severe bone loss in adults. Known as the “sunshine” vitamin because it is naturally produced when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet light , vitamin D has been garnering increasing attention recently.

The benefits of vitamin D are quickly spreading and the news just keeps getting better. Research has shown for awhile that the “sunshine vitamin” can increase calcium absorption, thus building strong bones. Dr. Louise Parker, an epidemiologist and a world expert in the environmental exposures that can lead to cancer, says 1,000 units a day is well beyond what you can obtain from your diet. Vitamin D is a bit of a rare vitamin, appearing only in fatty fish; cod liver oil and egg yolks. Even if you were to sunbathe in southern climates, you would not take in 1,000 units.

“If you were to lie naked on a beach in the Bahamas; I don’t recommend that because of skin cancer, you cannot get up to the equivalent of 1,000 units of Vitamin D a day“, say Dr. Parker.

Vitamin D deficiency is often found in patients with headaches and neuralgia. There is strong evidence from two independent studies, which involved over one thousand people, that those with low vitamin D levels were twice as likely to develop Alzheimer disease , other types of dementia, and strokes.  Yes, there are dangers in taking too much vitamin D, but shouldn’t they call for doctors to test for this deficiency and correct it when it is present?  Even if we don’t know exactly if this supplementation will prevent strokes, Alzheimer or headaches, it makes sense to keep everyone’s level in the middle of the normal range.
