Vegan...before dinnertime?

Posted Mar 15 2011 12:00am
According to Wikipedia,
Dieting is the practice of ingesting food in a regulated fashion to achieve or maintain a controlled weight.
Ugh! How horrible and NOT FUN does that sound? What a terrible way to live your life! I have never been a fan of diets, and for most people, I do not think they work. Now, this is not because the diets themselves do not work, because some of them actually work very well, but who in their right mind would want to eat in a "regulated fashion?" I love food, and I think it is something that needs to be enjoyed and appreciated, not villainized.

So how can you enjoy all the foods you want to enjoy while also keeping a tiny waist? This is a question that haunts women on a daily basis. Well, I came across this article in the NY Times which talked about how their food writer, Mark Bittman, managed to whittle his waistline and control his cholesterol by a diet he penned "Vegan Before Dinnertime." His strategy was
My arrangement with myself is that from the time I wake up until dinner I eat only fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. I don’t even eat white bread during the day. And then starting at dinner, I do. I have one meal a day when I do pretty much what I want, which is normally quite indulgent.
As I said before, I do not favor diets, but this is one that I actually follow.  It is a successful strategy for several reasons. First of all, when people completely eliminate foods from their diets, they end up craving these things more. By allowing himself to postpone his less healthy eating habits until late in the day, he decreased his daily intake of calories and poor nutrition. Additionally, this diet teaches you how to eat in moderation while not depriving yourself, which is the key to a healthy diet. Lastly, this is a simple strategy that helps you make major changes in your diet and health...and what is better than convenience?

So if you need to lose a few pounds, why not try eating vegetarian before dinner? You'll be helping the environment AND your waistline, and you might also feel energized!
