When I first move to a new area, the first thing I want to do is experience it as the locals do. I want to meet new people, check out the local music scene, taste the best pizza in town. However, this can be hard for people who are busy with their jobs, kids, or just plain don't know how to break into the scene. That's where meetup.com comes in. Their motto is "Use the Internet to Get Off the Internet." And that's precisely what people do.
Meetup.com is a social site to get people out of their houses and into restaurants, theaters, soccer leagues, and discussion groups. There is something for everyone. I am currently part of the Women's Meetup, Ultimate Frisbee Meetup, Bookclub Meetup, and the Beer Meetup groups. This is a great way to keep busy, meet new friends, and try new things. It was a huge morale booster for me when I first moved to a new town. And the beauty of it is that the people involved are extremely inclusive and friendly.
So if you're new to town or have lived in the same place all your life but want to try something new, I recommend this easy and convenient way of finding a group of people who have the same interests, from literature to fly-fishing.
