UAB’s Cheerleaders are smiling even brighter today after winning third in the nation at the Universal Cheerleaders Association College National Championships.
The squad claimed the bronze medal with a spirit-filled, high-flying, green and gold performance at the competition , which was held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. UAB competed against 20 teams in the Small Coed D1 Division. It’s the highest finish for UAB’s squad since 2000.
The nationally-ranked squad is coached by Ashley Phillips and David Gilliland. Gilliland announced the win via Twitter Saturday, “UAB Cheerleaders 3rd place in the Nation!!!!! #UABelieve #GoBlazers #UCACollegeNationals,” whipping Blazer fans into a tizzy of happy, excited tweets.
“We’re so proud of our Blazers,” Gilliland wrote in an email after the win. “They’ve worked really hard this year and showed it tonight.”
The UAB Golden Girls, coached by Lindsay Hull, had a strong performance in the semifinals of the D1 Pom and Hip Hop Division, but unfortunately didn’t advance to finals. It was an extremely tough competition, Gilliland wrote, “The girls had two awesome performances. We’re so proud.”
Last year three UAB teams participated in the UCA/UDA College Cheer and Dance National Championships in Orlando. Each team came home ranked in the top 10 in their respective divisions. The UAB Golden Girls brought home the 10th place trophy in Division IA Pom, UAB's all-girl Stunt Group placed 7th in the partner stunt division, and the UAB Cheerleaders came back with the 6th place trophy in Division I Small Coed.
