Twenty-five part 2

Posted Aug 17 2011 10:03am

The Birthday festivities continued in DC with Restaurant Week. I picked Oyamel, a popular Mexican tapas restaurant.

One of my friends and I arrived early for a drink to celebrate our last final of the summer and for some guacamole. They make the guac at each table, but I decided to join the fun.

I warned our waiter that he might be out of a job for the end of the night. The guacamole was great, very fresh and not too spicy. Little did we know how much food was on the way.

Oyamel offered five courses for restaurant week, three plates, one taco and a dessert.

I started with the ceviche: wahoo with avocado, tomatillos, and jalapeno. It was fresh and light. My second course was the baby cactus salad (not pictured). The salad reminded me a lot of snap peas and was served with the most incredible cherry tomatoes. My third course was the taco (also unpictured). My order got mixed up and I ended up with the barbeque pork taco. It was good, just not what I wanted. The fourth course was the corn tamal. This was by far my favorite thing I ordered. The corn was fresh and sweet, but it had an amazing texture. One of the girls ordered the braised short ribs with cilantro sauce, which was my favorite dish of the table. I could have taken a bath in the sauce. For dessert I ordered the pumpkin flan with pineapple sorbet. The flan was good, but I was honestly so full by then it was hard to really enjoy.

The service wasn’t great for the first night, but we all enjoyed our meals. It was a ton of food for $35! Plus I was in great company. Thank you to everyone who made my birthday so special!
