Triathlon newbie

Posted Oct 19 2012 6:12pm

Thanks for all the sweet comments on my last post about our wedding! I promise to have some better pictures once the photographer is done with them.

Now to catch up on my current workouts… as you may remember I went from cardio fiend, to lifting strictly and now I’m just sort of “stuck”.

There was one thing I secretly promised to myself when I was on the road to gaining weight back: When I reached my healthy weight I would do a triathlon

I fell in love. Head over heels in love. K and I participated in two sprint triathlons two weeks apart from each other. We signed up for them both KINDA last minute. We had to kind of crunch to start fitting in biking milage. Not to mention neither of us have a TRUE road bike. We had major disadvantages

First: Delaware Diamondman Triathlon – I swam in Lums pond. If anyone from Delaware knows Lums pond, there is a sign that says “NO SWIMMING” it’s disgusting. As my first open water swim it wasn’t the best choice. However I placed third in my age group!

Okay okay there were only 3 people in my age group. There I admitted it. Regardless I finished in under 1 hour and 45 minutes which was my goal :) Overall it was a great first sprint tri for us.

Second Tri: Bethany Beach Triathlon.

I’m the second person from the front bending over and getting the crappy Delaware beach rocks out of my wet suit.

This one was… interesting. First beach swim, I realized I do get sea sick while swimming in the open water. However I LOVED my wet suit until I went to unzipper it and got a full wave and gallons of water in my wet suit. Epic. I was a walking water balloon.

The bike portion: oh my lanta. it was 9.5 miles of pure 15-20mph winds coming directly at us. Did I mention directly? Did I mention we don’t have road bikes? Did I mention how awful the wind was. But coming back was epic. The wind pushing with us was such a break!

The run: uhm 4 miles. It was okay. I’m not a strong runner. I’m a strong swimmer. Pretty good biker. Terrible runner. But I ran the entire thing which was an accomplishment in itself.

If someone can tell me how to take a good picture while running hours please inform me.

My partner in triathlons, Nikki , placed 3rd in our age group! We didn’t get to meet each other because the race was huge but we chatted it up on twitter!

The season for triathlons is officially over. I would love to train for a Half Ironman in the off season but I do not want to give up lifting. Therefore I am stuck between both. I will keep you updated on what I’m doing. For now, I’m just enjoying HIIT, lifting, and long(er) runs.

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Do you have any fitness goals?

Would you ever want to do an ironman?
