That is the question and I think I know the answer.
I have always liked doing races. Not because I have a hope in hell of ever placing in my age group or in any form at all, but because I like the excitement or running with a big group of people. I especially like doing races that have a cool premise, a neat location or a really neat route.
Anyhow, I hadn’t really thought much about racing this year because after my surgery I really didn’t know how long it would be until I could. I’ve been back at it a few weeks and I really do think I would be okay if I started to try and do some 5k or 10k races. I’d be horribly slow, but it’s the experience, not the result for me these days.
Upon doing some research, there are a couple fun races coming up that I’d love to do:
Rubber Ducky 5k – I’ve done the 7mi here a few times, and although that would be a bit long for now, they do have a 5k
Energizer Night Race 5k or 10k – I’ve been looking forward to this new race all year. Nighttime race, cool LED night gear as the event swag, everyone runs in the dark. Fun!
Vancouver Historic Half 5k or 10k – Also a new event to Vancouver, I’ve done the sister event, Fort Langley Historic Half and it would be cool to try the Vancouver one for something new.
Boundary Bay Moustache 5k or 10k – I really don’t know why this is called the Moustache Marathon, but it’s along the beach so that would be cool but cold. Brrrr!
Most of these events are put on by our local event organizer, Try Events and are usually pretty fun. The Energizer race sounds cool to me because it’s a bigger event and we just don’t seem to have a lot of those cool or nationwide events in Vancouver. Or maybe it’s just race envy – the races everyone does in their own cities always sound so cool.
Anyhow, the problem is, a few of these events fall on really bad dates for me. The Rubber Ducky is this weekend and I don’t even know if it’s sold out or not, The Moustache is on a weekend that I’ll be out of town and the Energizer Night Race is on the November long weekend and we’ll be on the island. The Spooktacular Scurry is the morning after our next Wine Club night so that doesn’t work well either. I know it’s all choices, but it just feels like a lot of the races I wanted to do this fall won’t really work with my schedule.
So what’s a girl to do? Here’s the best I can come up with:
Keep watching the event lists and see if I’ve missed anything that might work
Run the Spooktacular Scurry hungover – heck, I’ll be in a costume nobody will know who I am anyways, right? Ha ha.
Look for something to race while we’re in Hawaii – it’ll be warmer there anyways
Forgo racing for this fall and just focus on getting stronger and then fill up my schedule with races in 2012
Sigh, something tells me #4 is the best choice from above, perhaps with a little #3 and #2 thrown in for good measure.
