This last week Tiger Woods made his public apology regarding his sexual infidelities or sexual addiction.
Debate has raged over whether he has a sexual addiction or
was using his claim of
sexual addiction to minimize accountability and responsibility for his infidelities.
The DSM-IV, which is the diagnostic manual for mental health professionals has a section on sexual addiction as indicated in the article:Tiger Woods: Sex addict?".
"The DSM-IV describes sex addiction under the category “Sexual Disorders Not Otherwise Specified,” as “distress about a pattern of repeated sexual relationships involving a succession of lovers who are experienced by the individual only as things to be used” and that sex addiction involves “compulsive searching for multiple partners, compulsive fixation on an unattainable partner, compulsive masturbation, compulsive love relationships and compulsive sexuality in a relationship.”
In one of his newsletters Dr. Amen pointed out that when people engage in pursuing new relationships, the brain becomes activated in the area next to where cocaine addiction is stiulated in the brain.
What do you think? Do you think Tiger Woods has a sexual addiction?
We can learn a lot from Tiger Woods about mental fitness. He has demonstrated the height of mental fitness in his pursuit of his golf career.
What is important to realize that a mentally fit person may not be mentally fit in all aspects of their lives. In fact, most people are mentally fit in some aspect of their lives and not others. Tiger Woods has not been mentally fit in regard to the relationship with his wife.
Let us hope that he will set goals to improve the relationship with his wife and courageously commit to being the best husband he can be much as he is committed to be the best golfer he could be.
Tiger Woods as honestly admitted that he has had entitlements in his life. Let us not be too critical of Tiger Woods for making this statement. All of us act as if we have entitlements in the problem areas of our lives. Don't we act as if we deserve and reward ourselves irrationally by eating too much, spending too much, drinking too much. or doing whatever too much?
Where ever there is a lack of focused goal activity and mental fitness, we act as if we are entitled to engage in self defeating behavior.
Tiger Woods has shown us the necessity of setting goals in areas of our lives, where we have acted without awareness of our self-defeating entitlements. Now is the time to change!
