It may sound like a good thing…but I assure you, it’s not. I am not talking thrills like a roller coaster or about finding out some really great news. No folks…today I witnessed something utterly HORRIBLE. Literally one of the most scary experiences of my life. Let me elaborate.
Well I had hoped to go for a run today since it was supposed to be the warmest day of the week (its kill me a little inside that 40 degrees will be the warmest day this week
). But unfortunately my body had other plans…my right shin is in A LOT of pain. Not when I run or workout but after the fact…its SO WEIRD (and painful). So I decided I’d head to the gym for some cross training instead.
Insert boring elliptical miles here.
It was already dark by the time I got outside to my bike and the air was FREEZING. At this point I was happy I brought gloves!
Everything seemed normal….though I’m not a fan of riding (or running!) in the dark.
The whole scene changed pretty quickly a few blocks down from the gym. The first thing I saw were the flames. At first I really couldn’t figure out what it was…there seemed like no real explanation why a wall of flames should be in the middle of a really nice, really busy street. But as I got closer, and heard the screams, I realized it was a car. On the side of the road. Bursting and popping with huge, yellow flames.

[it pretty much looked like this but it was a Jeep Cherokee and the flames were on a much larger scale]
At this point I think I pretty much went into shock because instead of turning down a different street or even crossing to the other side…I kept going towards the flaming vehicle. Explosion after explosion the flames grew and the car seemed even more unstable. The horn was blaring and it appeared as though some of the passengers in the car had gotten out. I could tell they were the ones who had been in the car from their screams and what they were saying…but the sheer panic in their voices made me fear the worst.
As I continued to get closer to the car (don’t even ask me why I thought it would be okay to ride by this thing!)…my worst fear was realized. Inside the flaming car…I saw someone struggling to move around and free themselves from the death trap.
My heart dropped. I literally felt sick. All the other cars on the rode were going every which way trying to avoid the scene and the air was filled with the sounds of on coming fire trucks. People were on their cell phones relaying the scene to others, calling emergency services, and trying to convey how horrible the whole thing was.
It was then that I realized why the other passengers cries were so desperate and full of fear…someone was still inside.
There wasn’t much I could do…I was so shaken up. I just kept riding, called my mom to tell her what I’d just witnessed, and tried to stay calm. My heart was still racing and as I got a little farther away I heard something even more disturbing than what I’d just witnessed…a huge *BANG*. I couldn’t even make myself turn around. I knew what had happened and I couldn’t even think about those people still at the scene. I don’t know whats worse…being trapped in the flaming car or being outside knowing your loved one is trapped with nothing you can do to help them.
It still doesn’t seem like what happened REALLY happened. I feel like I watched a movie….that’s how surreal it was.
I got home and turned on the news right away but nothing was on about what had just occurred! I couldn’t believe it! They were reporting about some stupid egg maker rather than something really important like the emergency that was going on.
All I can say folks is that I feel so lucky. I am just thinking about how greatly affected I was from just witnessing the whole incident…so I can’t even imagine the devastation the people it happened to must be feeling.
I hope to find out more details in the coming hours or days. When I learn anymore info I will definitely share it with you all.
Tonight…tell someone close to you that you love them, give them a hug, show how much you appreciate having them in your life. Because really….ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. I am sure those people never would have imagined their drive home would end so tragically. I certainly didn’t expect that on my 5 minute ride home from the gym.
Sorry if this story wasn’t the light hearted pick me up you needed or were expecting…but this really affected me and I needed to share it.
Thanks for being there for me to express my self.
Have a safe night everyone.
