Students and faculty of the UAB Department of Theatre are warming up for next week’s big gig: the Region IV Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The department was invited to perform the play "Postcards to J. Bird” (pictured), which has come full circle, from UAB to KCACTF and back again. It was written by UAB Theatre alum Stephen Webb in 2008 while he was still a student. In 2011, it was submitted to and won a prestigious Kennedy Center ACTF 2011 David L. Shelton Full-Length Student Playwriting Award. Theatre UAB included it in its season and performed it in November to sold-out crowds. The play’s KCACTF connections continue: Webb’s play has been invited to the regional festival in Daytona and will be performed there Feb. 1 at noon. Read about the play and watch a video interview with Webb.
But first, Theatre UAB will perform it on campus once again at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, to get ready for the big show. General admission tickets are $12; students $6; UAB employees and senior citizens $10. Seating is limited. Call 205-975-2787. Visit the UAB Department of Theatre at http://www.uab.edu/theatre .
Also in Daytona 17 students will vie for Irene Ryan acting awards or for stage management, dramaturgy or lighting, audio, costume, or scenery design awards.
The festival will take place Jan. 31-Feb. 4 and will be hosted by Daytona State College. The festival will feature productions and participants from universities and colleges from nine states, including Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Selected regional award winners may then travel to more national events.
