The Winner of “Guess That Food!”

Posted Feb 26 2010 9:24am

I must say, it was a toughie!

A couple weeks ago, our friend Duke took us to Frankie’s Nursery , located in Waimanalo.  This 7-acre farm has a gazillion fruit trees, and you can take a stroll in the farm with a fruit picker and pay for what you pick afterwards.  I was quite surprised by many of your answers, showcasing how fruit-savvy y’all are!  I haven’t even heard of some of these prior to our trip.  Anyways, here are the answers…

Item #1: This is an egg fruit! Completely new to me!  When I cut it open, it did look (and smell) like a perfect egg yolk.  I had P try it first but he said it was still unripe and bitter – whoops! hehe…

Item #2: Rambutan! The fruit looks similar to a lychee on the inside, but crazier looking on the outside.  Mother Nature works her wonders, doesn’t she?  (Don’t worry, those spikes won’t hurt ya, they’re like rubber!).

Item #3: Jackfruit! (I really can’t deal with the smell of durian, but jackfruit is one of my favorites!  It looks the same as a durian on the outside, with its spiky skin, but on the inside the fruit is firm and peels off in slices.  Will definitely come here again to get a hunk of this stuff!)

Item #4: Black sapote! I am VERY surprised some got this.  For those of you who guessed “green persimmon,” you are so in the ballpark.  Adam, a guy that works at the nursery, told me this fruit is actually in the persimmon family, and people usually eat it by stirring it into Cool Whip, to form something like a chocolate mousse.  The flavor itself is pretty bland, and I must admit, I was a little startled when I opened the fruit, because, well, see for yourself.  I was exposed to an utterly new world of fruit.

Item #5: Sapodilla! Tricky, I know.  It looks like a mamey sapote but when you cut it open, it’s like a pear with brown sugar on the inside.

There was a tie, so I had to close my eyes and pick a name.  And the winner is…

TRICIA!!!

Congratulations!  You have won one of my favorite books, How to Cook Everything, by Mark Bittman, the New York Times columnist (sorry, it’s not from him, he doesn’t even know who I am – haha!).  I will be contacting you to get your address and you will be getting a present from me soon.  Enjoy!  And for everyone else, thanks for playing!  (I would not even get many of these correct!).  Stay tuned this weekend for a new tofu recipe coming your way!
