The Ultimate Gift

Posted Apr 27 2009 11:40pm

Before our first child 6 years ago, my husband and I would see new movies quite often.  Obviously, with an infant, this gets harder to do!  As she grew a bit older (and more patient sitting still!), we would take her to current family-friendly movies, which were often animated.  Now that we have a second child who is only 2 1/2, seeing new movies are a very rare treat.

Our family recently became members of Netflix.  While they may not be “first run”, we are able to see more of today’s current movies in the comfort of our own home (and the kids can get up and move around at will).  Netflix is really great about making suggestions based on your queue of movies, and my husband selected a movie that I had not heard of called “The Ultimate Gift”.

I enjoyed the movie very much, but what I enjoyed most of all was learning that there is a website dedicated to the discussion of each of the 12 gifts that the lead character received in the movie.  Not to give anything away (because I really encourage you to rent it yourself), Jason Steven’s grandfather dies, and instead of leaving him his fortune, he delivers 12 messages by videotape.  Each of these is a “gift”, or a life lesson.

One of the gifts, that I am using as my “daily theme” today is The Gift Of Learning.  “Education is a lifelong journey whose destination expands as you travel” is a quote from the website www.theultimategift.com.  Each day brings a new opportunity to learn about the world around you and to find ways to make life a little better.

Lifelong Learning takes on several of the Six Dimensions of Wellness.  Learning keeps your mind and body engaged by activly pursuing knowledge and experience.  It keeps your mind sharb, improves memory, increases self-confidence, gives a feeling of accomplishment, and offers an opportunity to learn new skills.

One of the reasons I have taken to health blogging is not only the hope that I benefit others with stream of information, but also that I can use the information to help myself grow, which will in turn make me a better wife, mother, daughter, and friend to all who are in my life.

Another quote from the movie is “Life at it’s essence boils down to one day at a time.  Today is the Day”.  Life life today!
