The Little Things Are Everything: Five Ways to Smile Everyday

Posted Jul 02 2013 4:00am

The Little Things Are Everything.

In my life, I have learned the best gifts are gestures.  The best ideas are simple.  The most genuine attitude is kindness.  And life is best lived with a smile on your face.

In the spirit of celebrating Olivari’s “ Year of Little ” campaign, I want to share five ways I embrace the small joys and simple pleasures of day-to-day life.

  1. Begin everyday with coffee.
  2. Exercise my mind, my body, and my soul.
  3. Spend quality time with the people I love.
  4. Eat delicious and nutritious food.
  5. Smile through my actions, as well as my face.

And if ever I believe my work is done? Then I start Back at One… (name that song)

Begin everyday with coffee.

Sometimes when we become invested in the life-school-work balance, we lose touch with the simplest of pleasures.  For me, I have to start each and every morning with a cup of Joe.

It happies my soul.  It livens my mind and spirit (cough caffeine cough).  It allows me take a deep breath and prepare for the day ahead.

With coffee in hand, all things are possible.

Exercise my mind, my body, and my soul.

Each and every day, it’s important for me to invest in EVERY aspect of my well-being.  I like to think of my health as a tripod.  Without each leg, it will wobble or fall.

I exercise my body through a steadfast fitness regimen; my mind through reading and writing; and my soul through music, prayer, and relaxation.

I may not invest time into all three on a daily basis, but everyday I work towards to building up the wobbly leg (of my tripod).  Did I lose you with that analogy?

Spend quality time with the people I love.

The greatest gift you can give is your time.  Your energy.  Your attention.  Your love.

Every fleeting moment with a friend, a family member, or a significant other is a moment to cherish.  Whether it is in person, on the phone, or through social media – take the time to be with the people you hold near and dear to your heart.

Show them you care.  BE present.  BE kind.  BE loving.

Eat delicious and nutritious food.

At this point, we have fueled our sanity (through coffee, fitness, music, relationships, and so much more).

Now, let’s fuel our bodies.  Eating healthy and indulging in a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream? They can and SHOULD go hand-in-hand.

Keep it (mostly) clean… and live a little.  Be smart about the food that builds you up and tears you down.  But don’t restrict to the point of sad-tear-cry-I-just-want-chocolate.

Celebrate food.  Celebrate life.  Celebrate a healthy balance.

Smile through my actions, as well as my face.

In all you do and all you saySMILE.

You never know how you will light up a room. Brighten a day.  Or enliven a spirit.

Are you in the spirit of embracing the small joys in your life?  View Olivari’s series of 12 short films of little moments for some more inspiration.

Sometimes our most meaningful experiences are things that are only important to us. Sometimes small gestures, fleeting moments, or little memories make the biggest difference.
