Chances are you’ve seen the work of Florence Broadhurst without even realising it. Since 1959, her divine wallpaper & fabric pattern designs have been splashed world-wide, from hotels to handbags, curtains to carpets and cushions, rugs and wallpaper.

Her patterns are self described as “vigorous designs for modern living” signified by large, bold, contrasting-coloured prints, inspired by elements of nature such as birds, horses, art deco geometrics, flowing foliage and floral motifs.

Florence led a flamboyant life not only as a designer, but as a globetrotting performer. Hailing originally from Queensland, Australia, she traveled as a singer, comedian, painter, businesswoman and designer everywhere from China, India, Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, England and America.

Her death was as dramatic as her life, ending in her tragic murder in her Paddington home in 1977, a mystery that has never been solved. Her legacy carries on and she continues to intrigue the minds of many, so much so that her life has been celebrated across multiple platforms including the printed word (see ‘The life and death of Florence Broadhurst’ by David Leser and Helen O’Neill’s Florence Broadhurst: Her Secret & Extraordinary Lives ), the painted body – recreated on models by body artist Emma Hack (see images below) and even on the silver screen in Gillian Armstrong’s feature film ‘Unfolding Florence’.

Signature Prints in Sydney are the proud custodians of Florence Broadhurst’s range of wallpapers, fabrics, lifestyle pieces and hanging art.
