I’ve never been to New York, but I’m fast finding many reasons to go – one being to walk the High Line park with my very own footsies. Have you been there?
Running along the lower west side of Manhattan , the dilapidated raised rail line was doomed for destruction in 1999, until a group led by Robert Hammond and Joshua David, calling themselves the Friends of the High line fought for it’s preservation to turn the space into a public park – an aerial greenway.
With the aid of experts in horticulture, engineering, security, maintenance and public art, including planting designer, Piet Oudolf , landscape architects James Corner Field Operations , architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro , the High Line was transformed into a beautiful natural urban scape, a leading attraction for city.
Section 1 was unveiled in 2009 while Section 2 opened as recently as this June, and as a bonus summer treat, a rollerskating rink, has been installed for a limited time. Oh what I’d do to go!!
One of the High Line’s saviours, Robert Hammond, gave a top TED talk explaining how this whole thing happened:
