I hope everyone is having a fabulous week so far! With final papers due and a crazy work week, I have been running around like crazy. I have actually been "running" a little too much. With the big race this weekend, I am suppose to be tapering this week. I have read all of the articles, and books about how important tapering is, and have experienced it first hand as well. So, how is tapering going for me this time around? Well, not so great......
Being a fitness instructor doesn't really make it easy to rest up before a race. I'm not blaming my profession, I love what I do with all of my heart but it does present its challenges. When you're tapering, the main thing you want to avoid are doing things that cause excess muscle fatigue or soreness. Well, boot camp and sculpting classes definitely cause both, and I teach a lot of those! It is especially difficult to rest when the gym gets brand new equipment (aka gliders) the week before the race, and you just can't help but play with it! :) I'm a sucker for new fitness toys, and my inner thighs are paying for it today. Oh well, my little (well medium size) legs will finish this race no matter what!
I don't know about you, but I am a creature of habit. The very first race I ever completed, I ate a blueberry cliff bar right when I woke up and then a banana about 30 minutes before the race started. That race went pretty well, so I have stuck with it ever since. I'm not a huge fan of eating anything during a race, so I like to be very fueled up before the race starts. I've seen triathletes pound down a power bar mid run, and I definitely don't think I could do that. Gatorade, water and maybe a shot blok are about the only things I can handle once I cross the starting line. I prefer the Cliff Shot Bloks over Gu because they have a much better texture. They almost taste like giant gummy bears, which is never a bad thing!
Food for thought: Do you have trouble tapering before a race? What is your pre-race fuel of choice? How do you feel about eating mid-race?
