I’ve been meaning to write this one for quite some time now, but it’s a hard topic to discuss, especially since most of my readers, followers, friends and clients are vegans. But the truth is that for the past few years I’ve seen them make so much mistakes, that it’s even hard to say that some of them eat healthy at all. I know, it is a mass misconception that vegans eat healthy, but it is not the truth, at least not for all of them…
I tried to summarize the most common mistakes vegans make in their diets and although this list is far from complete, it is a start. If you are a vegan and you do some of the things listed below, please stop, you are sabotaging your own health.
~ Your drinks are not the healthy types. Meaning you drink too much coffee (more then 2 cups daily), read this post about it. You use soft drinks every day, and some of them are full packed with more then 10 tsp of sugar per cup. You don’t drink enough water and your body is in a constant state of dehydration. You drink too much fruit juices. I’ve hit a nerve with the last one, didn’t I? Now please, in order to be healthy, you have to make a difference between fruit juice and vegetable juice, and you should know that the vegetable one, especially if it has greens in it is great for your health, but pure fruit juice – not so much. The fruit juices are actually acidic when digested in the body, they are mostly sugar and they lack fiber.
~ Sugar is vegan. Yeah, that’s true, but that doesn’t mean you have to eat it daily!
Sugar in all it’s forms – pure sugar, honey, agave, maple syrup, dates paste, fruit juice is still sugar. It is the same substance that makes the omnivorous people sick when they eat too much of it, so why do you think that you are immunized? Sweets are a treat and you have to see them as such, eat them occasionally, not daily.
~ You eat too much refined grains. This is the first mistake people make when they decide to stop eating meat. Grains are a common food, a comfort one, a safe choice. You know how it tastes, you know how to prepare it and it is delicious. But not healthy, again if you eat too much of it. In fact, I know a lot of people who gained a lot of weight and their health declined when they decided to go vegan, only because they started eating too much grains. Still not convinced? Read this one on gluten, and what it can do to YOU.
~ You eat too much soya products. Mayonnaise replacements, meat replacements, anything replacements – it is made of soya. Soya is not a bad product, especially if it is organic and non GMO, but to have it with all of your meals…
~ You eat the same foods over and over again, particularly the ones above and your diet lacks diversity and fresh, live, natural foods. The healthy vegan must eat a huge assortment of all kinds of vegetables, whole grains, raw nuts and seeds and a little bit of fruits in order to nourish his body with all needed minerals, vitamins, enzymes and phytonutrients. The same is true for the omnivorous guys.
~ You use trans fats. Read this post and examine the oils in your house. Spot the bad ones and through them away…
~ You smoke. Well, as much as I don’t want to believe it, there are people out there that still smoke. And you know what, my 80-20 golden rule doesn’t apply here. Cigarettes are bad for you and they are bad for everybody around you, so do yourself a favor and just stop.
