Deadlifts & Double-unders
Our workout this morning was a generous serving of deadlifts, interrupted by a smattering of double-unders.

kip pullup progression:
floor: hollow holds / superman
bar: hollow hold / superman
kip swing
kip swing to static hold
kip swing to static hold to push away

7 rounds:
1:00 AMRAP:
3 deadlifts @ 60%, 115#
double-unders to failure
1:00 rest
My rounds: 17

The first round I got 17 DUs; the second round I got 14… and every round after that I got, like, 3. Which meant I did a lot of deadlifts. Which was OK by me; that was some sweaty fun! Every time we tripped on the rope, we started another round of deadlifts + DUs. Perfect score was 7; I got 17. On the up side: 51 deadlifts. On the down side: DU fail.

Dallas (The city, not the person)
Dave and I are hittin’ the road to Dallas today. On the way, we will be stopping in West, Texas, at the Czech Stop, and I will savor every bite of HALF a kolache. Fortified for the rest of the drive, we’ll rock out in the car (Dave made us a special summer road trip playlist), take a dip in the hotel pool, enjoy a cocktail in the hotel bar, and head out to…

The D, as in Detroit, as in Kid Rock.
… a Kid Rock show. I know! It seems weird that I would be a fan of the Early Mornin’ Stoned Pimp, but you know what? I think he’s funny. And I was sad when Pammie Anderson broke his heart. And I love to turn up his songs REALLY loud and shake my hair around. And on request, I can do the entire rap from the beginning of Devil Without A Cause (You knew that I was comin’ ’cause you heard my name, but you don’t know my game and never felt my pain…). I like his oddly authentic “I’m a rapper; I’m a cowboy” thing. I love the fire pots at his live shows and how the heat blasts melt my mascara (’cause, yes, I get that close to the stage). I adore that he has, like, six songs that include his own name as lyrics and that during the encore, he plays every instrument on stage. The audacity is adorable! And I la-la-love that he seems to be laughing with joy at his good fortune while he also visits the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq every year.

This ends my treatise on Mr. Kid Rock.

The Do-Over
Yesterday was a rest day which meant I missed a kickass workout at CFA. Dave and I are loading our dumbbells in the car with our suitcase so we can do the workout tomorrow morning in Dallas. Then we’re going to Mama’s Daughters’ Diner for breakfast. As I told Dave this morning, “A hard workout makes breakfast taste better.”

20:00 AMRAP
5 pushups
5/leg Russian step-ups
20 yd waiters’ walk (switch hands @ 10 yds)
5 burpees
100m run
20 yd farmers’ walk

Check back Sunday for the recap of The Big D weekend – and best wishes to you for summer fun!

  1. Walker says:

Holy deadlifts, batman! That was a good one this morning. I felt like I was being scolded for not having doubleunders, but i’ll take DLs as punishment over burpees any day. Have a great trip (and make sure you get out and stretch – car ride + boatload of DLs = soooore)

  2. Tom R. says:

Enjoy the weekend. Kid Rock was in OKC earlier this week, and I am pi$$ed at myself for missing it. Agree with Walker. Driving after DLs = no bueno. Do the K-Star Mobility WOD and sit down in the bottom of a squat for awhile at all rest stops.

  3. Shannon says:

Great workout and great weekend plans!

I saw The Kid earlier this summer. Talk about energy and stamina. I suspect there might be some crossfitting going on somewhere. ;)

I enjoyed his “effing 40″ song so much I was able to forget about the sweaty drunk mess behind me! Have a great time!

  4. You are cracking me up with the Kid Rock! I love it! I did listen to Cowboy (twice) on the way to the gym for CFT, so I hear you. James said he will take the other half of your kolache. :)

I haven’t mustered up the gumption to write about the deadlifts today. Sixty percent of my new 1RM is 125. So it was…challenging. I’m actually taking a nap right now type of challenging.

    Have a great weekend!!

  5. Lydia says:

Deke Dickerson played at the Kid Rock cruise last year. True story. I know. I made that same face when I heard it.

  6. Meghan E. says:

Yeah, I totally thought you were talking about Dallas the person. ;)

Nice double under workout. Love it!

  7. JL says:

yay! i hope you had fun here in Dallas! Now WHICH Mama’s Daughter did you go to?? I’m literally right around the corner from the one in Lewisville (a few minutes north on 35 from Dallas)

I don't want to ruin the joyride of this book by telling you too much about it. I'm about halfway, and I'm finding it to be an irresistible page turner. There's spookiness and mystery and unexplained phenomena and a foggy setting in Wales and old-timey photos... well, you just need to read it.
