Taste Buds Prefer Natural

At the grocery store the other day, I went by the protein bar/granola bar organic section for some lara bar pick ups and picked up one of these to try

I flipped it over and saw the ingredient list and just put it back down. I’m so use to the 5-6 ingredients in lara bars (or less) and I just put it down. Then I thought about it again, and said I could use the extra protein (I’ve been lifting more lately). It was gluten and sugar free so there were some pluses. I figured I would just try it once and see…

The verdict?

Meh.

The consistency was OK, harder and more tough to chew. The taste was “meh”, and I would have preferred the jocalat lara bar

Lets compare ingredients.

Think Thin Dark Chocolate Bar:

Protein Blend (whey protein isolate, soy protein isolate, calcium caseinate), glycerin, coating (maltitol, palm kernel oil, cocoa, soya lecithin, salt, natural flavors), maltitol syrup, soy crisps (soy protein isolate, cocoa powder, calcium carbonate), cocoa powder, ground peanuts, water, canola oil, natural flavors, soya lecithin, tricalcium phosphate. Vitamins and Minerals: ascorbic acid, d-alpha tocopherol, niacinamide, zinc oxide, vitamin A palmitate, electrolytic iron, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, thiamin mononitrate, folic acid, biotin, potassium iodide, vitamin B12.

Jocalat Larabar:

Ingredients: Organic Dates, Organic Almonds, Organic Walnuts, Organic Cocoa Powder, Organic Unsweetened Chocolate, Organic Cashews

In comparison: Think thin has less fat, more protein, no sugar, 1gm less carbs, less fiber, more calories (but its bigger)

Jocalat Larabar: more fat (although, its coming from organic nuts, full of healthy fat), more fiber, more sugar (but from dates), 400 mg of potassium, less protein, more magnesium.

I am a true advocate for getting our food from wholesome, natural ingredients. The only time I usually grab a bar is when I am out and about and short on time for making myself food, or sometimes I just crave a larabar. All the ingredients in the jocalat are organic, not to mention it is soy free, gluten free, and vegan. Perfect choice for those with food allergies!

My body (and taste buds) prefer the natural taste of larabars, and I could tell immediately the difference between the two. The lesser ingredients the better- our bodies were made to digest wholesome food and ingredients, rather than the abundance of manufactured ingredients, with many of them created in a lab. I think the products designed for weight loss that you see in grocery stores are making the problem even worse, and people need to learn about the importance of clean and natural foods. Our bodies will thank us!

This is not to say we can’t enjoy some products that “aren’t so good” from time to time. The point is, treat your body right, and keep everything in moderation. Eat clean and feed your body the good stuff, its the only one you’ve got for this lifetime.
