Superfoods….no, they’re not action heroes - just foods that are delicious and also really nutritious.
Last summer (June 30, 2008) the NY Times published a list of 11 foods that most people aren’t eating but should be. It’s definitely worth checking out, but I’ve got my own list of 11 Superfoods - and I challenge you to eat one food off of the list for the next 11 days. Here are the first 3:
Avocados
Avocados are not only rich in healthful monounsaturated fats, they have more potassium than even bananas. They’re also a great source of Vitamin E and Vitmain B-6, folate and fiber.
Brazil Nuts
A super-concentrated source of selenium which is a trace mineral believed to promote DNA repair and the destruction of cancer cells (particularly of the prostate, colon and lungs). A single Brazil nut contains your daily requirement of selenium.
Chia Seeds
These are a personal favorite of mine. A cross between poppy and sesame seeds in flavor and looks, chia seeds are an Omega-3 powerhouse. G reat sprinkled on salads or vegetables, cottage cheese or in a smoothie, chia seeds also have a high anti-oxidant level that gives them a longer shelf-life than flaxseeds. Plus you don’t need to grind them before consuming them. My favorite brand is Navitas Naturals and I just discovered it on Amazon for a great price, which is good news since I eat them often!
Be Well,
Carolyn
