I’ve casually professed my love for cinnamon several times on the blog in the past.  However, today I’m going to dedicate an entire post to this favorite spice of mine and its wonderful health benefits.

I love it so much that if I had been a Spice Girl my name would have been Cinnamon Spice.

Not that I’ve given it much thought or anything… ;)

Just a sprinkling of cinnamon in your morning coffee, on your toast, or over a bowl of oatmeal can:

  • Lower LDL cholesterol
  • Stabilize blood sugar
  • Boost your metabolism
  • Help to prevent inflammation in the body (thus preventing some types of cancer)
  • Provide manganese, dietary fiber, iron and calcium
  • Help to prevent gas (thus increasing your popularity level)

Personally, I sprinkle cinnamon in my morning smoothies (which I drink out of my awesome Foodbuzz tumbler).  It makes for a great natural sweetener.

I also enjoy heating a mug of unsweetened vanilla almond milk with cinnamon.  It’s such a comforting beverage, especially in the fall and winter months.

If you’re looking for other ways to use cinnamon, try some of these recipes:

Are you a fan of cinnamon?  What is your favorite way to use it?   Aside from the ways I’ve already mentioned above,  I love adding cinnamon to my sweet potatoes.  Along with a little Earth Balance butter, it is the perfect combination.

What would you choose as your Spice Girl name?

Have a great weekend!

  1. I love cinnamon! Definitely put it in my coffee and on my cereal. My husband always says he doesn’t like cinnamon but he never notices when I sneak it into things :)

Haha. I love when we’re able to pull little healthy tricks on our men. :)

Loved reading this post, as I eat leftover roasted pork and apples, both sprinkled with cinnamon :) It’s been my favorite spice this fall, and now I’m dying to try it on a sweet potato (since I just got some in my farm box!) I’ve also been obsessed with pure maple syrup – have made a few recipes with that as an ingredient. Enjoy your weekend!

Apples and cinnamon were made for each other! Cinnamon, honey, Earth Balance and sweet potatoes will literally make your fall. Try it ASAP! :)

  3. You are so funny. :) I love sliced apples with cinnamon. I put them in a bag, add cinnamon and shake. Taste like candy apples! Love it. My fave spices are pepper, basil, paprika, garlic powder, and cardamon. I think I’d go with Cardamon Spice as a name! Garlic Powder Spice is not to groovy. :)

LOL. Garlic Powder Spice is probably not a great choice, but Cardamon Spice has a definite ring to it. ;) Enjoy your weekend, Spice Girl!

  4. Loving the post – Cinnamon Spice – ha! I love a little touch of cinnamon – more an all spice kinda gal. If I have too much cinnamon in or on my food there will be a sneezefest going on.

    • thegrassskirt

I’ve definitely gone too heavy with the cinnamon before and sent myself into a sneezing fit. Not fun!

  5. Yes! I am a fan of cinnamon! I love using it in recipes, adding some to my cereal, oatmeal or yogurt. :)

    • thegrassskirt

I’m not sure that I’ve ever added it to cereal. What is wrong with me?! I know first hand that oatmeal and yogurt taste awesome with cinnamon though. :)

  6. I love cinnamon too! Probably my favorite spice and I put it in everything :)
