Summer Holiday Primer – Day 12 – Pick some good beach books

Posted Oct 02 2013 4:30am

The Beach is the obvious one, and then there’s The Four Hour Work Week . I once read The Omnivore’s Dilemma on a beach in Fiji and while travelling through Europe I devoured Love in the Time of Cholera and The Life of Pi . If you’re going on a long trip then Shantaram is a goodie but if it’s just a couple of days then Maclolm Gladwell’s What the Dog Saw is a perfect collection of essays to dip in and out of (I freaking love that guy).

I like to have one fiction and one non-fiction book on the go. One to zone out with and one to help me strategise my future. I like books that help me learn how to do something or that covers interesting ideas while I’ve got the holiday headspace to think things through.

Good books

If you’re not sure what you like then here are a few beach book resources and inspiration:

  • Bestseller lists will give you the skinny on what’s popular right now. Go for the NYT or the Guardian .
  • Many book stores have staff who are full of knowledge, go in to your local (if you’re lucky enough to still have one) and have a chat.
  • If you’re shopping online there are a few sites that’ll be a big help. Amazon is renowned for its customer review system and many people post very thorough and helpful opinions. Booktopia is my Aussie online site of choice. They have a great email newsletter covering all the newest titles and they charge $6.50 flat rate for shipping to anywhere in AUS.
  • Ask a mate who reads to recommend something for you. They know you and what you’re like and they’ll often be able to loan you a copy of something they’ve loved saving you some cash too.
