After yesterday’s Stress Less post, I wanted to share some foods that are known to help relieve stress. More specifically, the vitamins and minerals that can calm the nervous system, control blood sugar levels and help the body cope with stress.

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) – plays a key role in energy production and treating nervous system conditions including stress, anxiety and fatigue
Vitamin B6 – “mood vitamin”, required for release of serotonin
Vitamin B12 – plays a crucial role in energy production and preventing depression
Vitamin C – boosts immune system and protects against cardiovascular disease
Vitamin E – fights free radicals, particularly those that cause heart disease
Carbohydrates – boosts serotonin production which calms the body
Fiber – reduces risk of heart disease, regulates blood sugar
Folic acid – helps stabilize mood, reduces risk of stroke and heart disease
Iron – lack of limits oxygen delivery to cells causing fatigue and decreasing immunity
Magnesium – helps soothe the nervous system
Omega-3s – suppress production of cortisol and adrenaline, the anxiety hormones
Potassium – keeps blood pressure low, lack of leads to fatigue
Zinc – helps maintain a healthy immune system, improves stress levels
*Foods that contain antioxidants are excellent stress-relieving foods.
- almonds – high in Vitamin B2, Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin E
- apples – full of iron and phosphorus
- asparagus – high in folic acid
- bananas – high in potassium and Vitamin B6, carbohydrate
- blueberries – rich in antioxidants, high in fiber, rich in Vitamin C
- broccoli – high in Vitamin C

- oats – high in fiber, iron Vitamin B6
- salmon – omega 3s

Please note, this is just a sampling of the foods that contain stress-relieving vitamins and minerals, but it’s a good starting point with accessible, healthy choices.
Any questions?
Do you eat any of these stress-relieving foods on a regular basis?
