Stress and hair loss

Stress is realized when the problems in life go out of proportion to resolve them. Stress is due to change and it does not occur in pleasurable situations. These days stress is a part of day to day life. In happy and prosperous life the person looks healthy and hair is shiny and healthy. Stress can cause blood pressure, diabetes, stroke or heart failure. Hair fall is very much related to stressful situations. The condition of hair can predict the intensity of stress in a person’s life. Depression and stress can cause dry and lifeless hair. Children also face a problem of stress due to their academic performance.

Normally hair grows about half an inch every month. Then there is a resting period and then they fall. The cycle is of approximately one year. Loosing 50 to 100 hairs per day is considered normal. Lose of more than 100 hairs daily is considered as hair loss.

There are two types of hair losses due to stress Telogen effluvium and Alopecia areata. In Telogen effluvium the hair loss is due to stress. Stress may be due to illness, surgery, work related stress, financial problems, childbirth, divorce, accident, or death in the family In situations of stress the hair stop growing for 2 to 3 months and then start falling. Generally the hair starts falling but by that time the traumatic situation is over. In this type the hair generally grows after 6 to 9 months after the stress is resolved. In the situations of stress the body behaves to deal with more serious problems like dealing with stress or the illness. Health of hair or their growth is kept aside for some time. Once the bigger problem of stress or illness is resolved then the hair growth starts again.

In Alopecia areata the white blood cells attack the hair follicles and the hair loss is generally of the entire body. The hair may grow again without treatment or in some cases treatment may be required. It is important to note that sudden hair loss may be an indication of underlying medical condition.

Learning stress relaxation techniques to maintain a good health and to keep away diseases like blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and heart failure and also hair loss. Yoga is a good stress relaxation technique. Reading books, being with family, watching movies and many other are stress relieving techniques. Basically finding out the cause of stress and treating it can relieve it.
