There are two types of hair losses due to stress Telogen effluvium and Alopecia areata. In Telogen effluvium the hair loss is due to stress. Stress may be due to illness, surgery, work related stress, financial problems, childbirth, divorce, accident, or death in the family In situations of stress the hair stop growing for 2 to 3 months and then start falling. Generally the hair starts falling but by that time the traumatic situation is over. In this type the hair generally grows after 6 to 9 months after the stress is resolved. In the situations of stress the body behaves to deal with more serious problems like dealing with stress or the illness. Health of hair or their growth is kept aside for some time. Once the bigger problem of stress or illness is resolved then the hair growth starts again.
In Alopecia areata the white blood cells attack the hair follicles and the hair loss is generally of the entire body. The hair may grow again without treatment or in some cases treatment may be required. It is important to note that sudden hair loss may be an indication of underlying medical condition.
